Golers Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
The Golers will be playing a show at SBC Restaurant in Vancouver on February 6th with Christ Airand Selfist to celebrate the digital re-release of our latest album In 'n' Outlaws on Bandcamp. We
have also just started making up new riffs and ideas for future songs but we are only in the early stages of creativity at the moment.
2.You are re-issuing your 2013 album in February, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?  In 'n' Outlaws is definitely our heaviest and most intense album to date. It is a modern day crossover sound that blends many styles of aggressive music such as Thrash, Hardcore, Punk, Death and  Black metal. We have always had elements of crossover style riffing on all our albums which is a fine balance between Punk and Metal but I would say that In 'n' Outlaws leans more towards Metal than Punk. We like to refer to this unique hybrid of Metal as Ore, however we are probably the only ones that call ourselves that. LOL

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?  Lyrically there has always been a duality to the Goler's Music. On one hand  we have ridiculously humorous sick and twisted  themes  that touch on incest (In 'n' Outlaws, Riff Cult, Inbred Militia, Country Blumkin) , Psycho Seagulls divebombing and shitting on you (Kamikazi), party anthems (Alcoholics Unanimous), and the amazing speed that our drummer can take a shit (Quickshit McGraw) and then there are the very dark deep philosophical lyrics that are meant to be interpreted individually by the reader. (Paradise Entrails, The Path, Behind the Sun)
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Golers'?
The Golers are a family from South Mountain, Nova Scotia that have been inbreeding for many years. They became famous in the 80's when people started to realize what they were doing and as a result they were all over the news. After this many people started to use the Goler family name in a derogatory fashion as an insult such as " What are you a Goler"  to imply that you are stupid, etc. It is sad that this has happened to these people who did not know any better because incest was prevalent in their family for many years being passed down from one generation to the next. The Golers as a band like to Inbreed many styles of closely related aggressive forms of music such as Metal, Punk, Hardcore, Death, and Black Metal and as a result we adopted their family moniker. We also like to take the negative tone out of their family name and give it a positive definition of brotherhood in Metal. Although we do write lyrics that have a humorous take on the dark nature of incest, we still recognize the seriousness of the matter and try to take the slander out of their tarnished name by giving it a new meaning.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?  Two shows that stand out  for the Golers was when we opened for Suicidal Tendencies, The Dayglo Abortions, and the Accussed in Spain back in 2007. The cool thing about these shows were that there was a great turnout and  most of the crowd was already there when we opened. It also meant a lot to us to be sharing the stage with bands that hugely influenced us growing up. As far as stage performance goes the Golers are always aggressive, sweaty and high energy.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Until the summer we will be just playing in western Canada, but then in July/August we are planning to do a cross Canada tour from Vancouver to Halifax and back which should take about 5 weeks. We also have plans to go to Europe in 2016 but that will take some time as we need to raise  funds and make more contacts for that adventure. .
7.Currently you are unsigned, are you open to working with another label again in the future or do you prefer the DIY approach a lot more?
We are always open to hearing what a label has to offer, and if it is something that can be clear and written in a contract that we are happy with then we will work with them. Until that happens we will just keep doing it ourselves.
8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of thrash, extreme metal and punk?
We have been getting great response around the world regarding our music. We had one kid from Brazil who sent us a video of him playing our song Grand Design from our 3rd album Backwoods Messages on guitar note for note. This was very cool as we have never even been to Brazil, yet we have a fan there that has picked out our song by ear. He even had the solo down. LOL  We also have people from all over Canada, The United States and Europe that ask if we are ever going to play in their neck of the woods. Hopefully with time we will be able to get out there and play all those places.

9.Are any of the members involved with any other musical projects or bands these days?                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Myself and Cranswick have just recently got involved with a Black Metal band called Burial Kult. They have been around for awhile and we are the new members so our input is only in the early stages and it will be exciting to see how that unfolds. I also play bass in a Star Wars themed Porno Grindcore band  called Zuckuss who are currently recording their 4th album entitled Zuck My Noc. Another band I play guitar in is a Rock 'n' Roll Bluesy Metal band called Cocaine Moustache who also have plans to record our 2nd album later this year called All hail the Rail. Another heavy band I just recently joined is Dregs of Humanity which I play guitar with my old bandmate from Subversion Jim Huhn.
10.When can we expect new material and also what musical direction do you see the band heading into during the future?   .                                                                                                                                                                  We are just starting to get our creative juices flowing again and  the song ideas are still in their infancy so it will be at least a year or more before we put anything out. Our next goal is to write an EP before we do another full length album. I am sure we will be expanding on our brand of Inbred Hillbilly Crossover Thrash Metal.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
There have been lots of bands that have influenced the Golers such as Poison Idea, Suicidal Tendencies, Slayer, Terrorizor, SOD, The Dayglo Abortions, Entombed and Celtic Frost to name a few. I still listen to my all time favorite albums like Slayer's Reign in Blood  , SOD's Speak English or Die and a lot of thrash from that era but as far as somewhat newer albums go   Suffocation's  Pinnacle of Bedlam is an both amazing  and inspiring. . .

12.What are some of your non musical interests?
Some of my non musical interests are smoking weed, drinking beer and women.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?                                                We will be touring a lot more in the next year and we will also be writing lots of new material so PREPARE TO BE GOLERIZED!!!!
