Machines Of Indetermenate Origin Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

A: We are a duo from Hobart, Tasmania, the small island state at the bottom of Australia. Myself Matt Warren (drums/percussion/vocals) and Aaron Metcalf (guitars/percussion) have known each other for about 28 years and were in our first bands together. We started this project in late 2007 after having not played together for quite a few years.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

A: A difficult one. A basis in metal, but that's not what we really consider it. It's heavy, dense and sometimes harsh and tribal. But we like to contrast that with quieter plaintive moments too.  We grew up listening to Killing Joke, Voivod, Godflesh, Black Sabbath, Dead Kennedys and so on. We've been told we sound a bit like The Melvins, Isis and Fudge Tunnel. It's almost like slowed down, abstract punk rock.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

A: Interestingly the majority of what's sung is nonsensical. We treat the vocals mainly as a melodic or sometimes rhythmic texture. It's inspired by Damo Suzuki's 'instant composition' technique and the some of the Dadaist poetry. There are occasionally real words used and they may reflect what the song is about. We are both fairly politically and socially minded and that can figure into our material, but we're keen to not be overt with a 'message'.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

A: There is a term used in online collectors circles that is 'Recordings Of Indeterminate Origin' which is a slightly less dodgy way of saying "bootlegs". I always liked that term, the slightly mysterious nature of it. When it came to name the project, Machines came up at some point as a reflection of our kind of industrial sound and we put that on the front.

5. Currently there are only 2 members in the band, are you planning on expanding the line up in the future or do you choose to remain a duo?

A: There are no plans to expand. We enjoy the challenge of making music such as ours with just two people. It makes us both play a certain way and adding more people would alter that. It's easier to make decisions too. That's not to say we wouldn't consider guests on songs for things we just can't/don't play. We've done that live a few times.

6. Has the band done any live shows or is this strictly a studio project?

A: Yes. We started off basically jamming/studio, but it's really a big noisy immersive environment that should be experienced live. So we play fairly regularly and recently did our first foray interstate.

7.Rough Skies Records is planning on releasing the album on vinyl, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

A: A Hobart based independent label run by Julian Teakle from the band The Native Cats.  It's been around for a number of years and started off as an avenue for his own music, but quickly became interested in releasing things by local artists. So the label has put out two compilations of alt/indie music called 'Community' and 'Community 2' and a recent vinyl release by the Hobart Improv Collective. Julian has been quite supportive of M010 and we approached him to help us do a vinyl release of the new album. He was keen. We were fortunate to have James Plotkin (Scorn, OLD, Khanate) to remaster it for vinyl. It sounds great.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your recordings by fans of underground music?

A: I think we're relatively unknown, even in the underground. As this new album is still barely released it hasn't gotten much feedback at all yet apart from your own, we're hoping for more. But the previous EPs got some really positive and encouraging responses.

9. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?

A: Aaron pretty much sticks with this project and runs the studio/rehearsal room we work out of. He does the odd bit of recording/engineering for others and we both contributed to a Concrete Lung (UK industrial metal band) recording. He also has a part time studio project called Manufactured Pop Whore. I've got a few things on the go. I do solo drone stuff under the name mumble(speak) and do noise stuff with The Non-Compliant Airmen. I'm in a duo called Untermorast which are kind of on hiatus. I play various instruments as part of the Hobart Improv Collective. Hobart is a small but, very active music community.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

A: Not really sure. We recently recorded a new song that will likely end up on 'Community 3'. It's a little more uptempo and in a higher key than we usually do. Not sure if it indicates how things may change, but we have definitely evolved from the first recordings, so I'm guessing we'll continue to discover what grows from our self imposed limitations.

Master Charger Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

At present, we are in the process of writing new material for the follow up to Unity In Black and are also promoting the album by playing live show in and around the UK.

2. How would you say your newer material differs from the previous albums that you have put out?

The new material seems to have a more direct 70's heavy rock / metal approach. I think we have favoured more of the groove and melodic influences over the punk elements this time around while still retaining the doom and blues feel to the music. We have also re-defined the sound by stripping the band back to a 3 piece unit and tuning the guitars up slightly to achieve a clearer tone.

3. Can you tell us a little bit more about your song lyrics?

The lyrics for Master Charger are usually based on the darker side of things. A lot of the ideas come from life inspirations. There is also some dark humour in there too but there is also some lighter shades to the lyrics. Some of it is basically about being free and the ability to be able to express yourself which ever way you feel.

4. When I was listening to the songs and saw some of the past album cover's I noticed
some occult references, would you say that occultism plays any role in your music?

I think it's great that people see different things in the band when they listen to our music. While I wouldn't say that occultism plays a big part in Master Charger, it sure does have a dark side and I think you can certainly get different vibes from this album. I think living in a world where there is a lot of negative issues is hard to neglect when writing music. I personally keep an open mind when it comes to religion. When it comes to images for album art, we just pick what goes with the album theme.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

I don't know really. I guess we were just looking for a simple but effective name that no one had and that people would remember. Master Charger came up and just seemed to fit the music we were writing.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

I think Master Charger is still to play it's best show but so far all the shows have been pretty good in their own right. As for the bands stage performance, I would say it is quite edgy.

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We currently have a couple more shows to fulfill in the UK but no touring plans as of yet. We would love to play outside of the UK but it is very hard to do so without the correct funding.

8. Recently Black Vulture Records re-issued your 2011 album, what are your thoughts on the final out put?

I cannot comment on this as of yet as I am yet to see the final product. I do believe that Mike at Black Vulture Records appears to be doing a good job with regards to promoting Unity In Black and I am confident that the final product will be a good one.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of metal and rock?

It is still very early in the bands career to answer this question thoroughly. However, what I have seen and the reports that I have heard, all seems to be doing good. We are still a very underground band that not a lot of people are aware of. People that have heard Master Charger really do dig what we are doing and have attracted fans both young and of an older generation to our music. So come on people check us out!!!!!

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

The band seems to be growing into a more mature way of writing as each new track is being written. We try to write music that is timeless which is still how I feel when I listen to an old Black Sabbath album. Timeless hard heavy rock is the direction for Master Charger.

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Influences are pretty obvious I think, bands such as Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Cream, Mountain, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Trouble, Saint Vitus, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Free, Pentagram, Hawkwind, Kyuss, Sleep, Early Celtic Frost, Early Slayer, Early Venom and Early Judas Priest. Bands I really dig a present are Electric Wizard , Orchid and Mos - Generator. I also listen to old folk like Nick Drake, John Martyn, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne, Roy Harper and I love early Jethro Tull. This list could go on and on to be honest.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Well I kinda just listen to music, watch films and TV Series and chill with my wife and kids.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

I would like to say thank you for a great interview with some well thought out question. I would also like to thank all the loyal followers of Master Charger old and new. For those that have not heard of us, please check us out. Thanks again and peace to all!!!

Dogs For Breakfast Interview

Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Everything is going right, we’re working for next season, we’re speaking for some italian and European gigs, meanwhile we’re writing two new songs cause we’ll be out this winter with a split.

.How would you describe the musical sound of the new album?
Well…I have read every kind of title for The Sun Left These Places’s sound, so can’t give it a name, but we think is a mix of some kind of components like noise, metal, hardcore and a right amount of experimentation.

What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
We love write about love, death, passion and everything moves feelings in the human mind. In this brand new album there’s an underlying theme: the darkness. The lyrics are a collection of tales about situations and episodes where darkness feel on the characters. There are a tribute to Billie Holiday (The Lady) and one to Skip James (Cypress Grove Blues), too.
Two good examples of love, death, passion and lives lived in darkness.

What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
There are no special hidden meanings, only it sounds good.

What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Well…Every show is intense and addictive for us, so we really love play on stage and I can’t identify a particular show. Our shows are intense, strong, vigorous and professional.

Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
We played some Italian gigs and in these days we’re working on some European tours, we’re trying to close two tours for next fall, but is not easy, then if anyone is interested in one of our show, can write us.

The new album came out on both Subsound Records and Escape From Today, do you feel that working with 2 different labels is a huge benefit for the band?
Certanly. Both labels are small labels, so it’s important to join forces and money.

On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of metal and hardcore?
We play for many years, but the band and the name are young, so we’re working to promote us. In that countries when we have important distributions like Uk, Germany, France, Belgium and Holland is good, we can get reviews and interviews and people write us to inquire, we’re getting in touch with many people in Europe. We sell some albums in USA too, but is more complicate there.

Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
For me (Fabio) and Paolo is the only one band, Andrea, however, plays in some other bands.

What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We don’t know exactly, but certainly we’ll work hard to develop the sound we met in this last album, in particular in songs like Red Flowers, January 21 and Vision.

What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We have very different backgrounds, we’re listening to countless albums, bands, genres, we all love metal, rock, but so jazz, blues, folk and electronic. For example, in metal/rock scene we’re listen to Red Fang’s records at this moment…
Many bands have influenced and influence our music every day, an example? Black Sabbath.

Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Oh…nice question, unusual. We all love arts, food, cinema and girls, but for me and my brother Paolo the first interest is to practice Downhill. Andrea studies music and plays in several bands.

Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Hope to meet Dogs For Breakfast on your way!
Bye.

Indicative born as an instrumental project with no stylistic limits in which we melt our musical influences and experiences.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

We can define our sound as a mix of math rock, metal, prog and also post rock.

La Colpa Interview

Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
LA COLPA, IS A PRODUCT OF THE MADE IN ITALY LIKE THE PIZZA OR THE ESPRESSO, BUT THIS IS ROCK. ROCK MADE IN ITALY. THE BAND IS FROM MILAN AND IT START WORKING TOGHETER IN THE EARLY 2012, AFTER ONE HARD YEAR OF WORK TOGHETER, WE ENTEREED IN THE NOISE FACTORY STUDIO FOR THE RECORDING SESSION, WE’VE FOUND OUT THAT OUR TRACK'S WERE VERY STRONG AND POWERFUL, SO WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE ONLY FIVE SONGS (BETWEEN THE EIGHT TRACKS THAT WE’VE RECORDED) FOR THE CREATION OF THE FIRST PROMOTIONAL EP THAT WAS CALLED “MUTUO PERPETEUO”. WE WANTED TO PLAY IT LIVE AND GET OFF FROM THE STUDIO. IN OUR OPINION IT IS ONLY IN THE LIVE DIMENSION THAT YOU CAN LIFE TO A SONG. SO FROM FEBRUARY 2013 WE STARTED TO PLAY IT IN EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE AROUND ALL THE ITALIAN PENINSULA.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
OUR SOUND IS A BALANCED MIX BETWEEN THE POWER OF THE RIFFS AND THE LYRICS MELODY. THE ALL EP SOUNDS AS THE SAME WAY WE PLAY LIVE. IT WAS RECORDING LIVE IN STUDIO.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
IN OUR LYRICS WE TRY TO TAKE ALWAS PLACE FROM THE REALITY AROUND US. FROM OUR CITIES, FROM OUR LIVES, IT ISN’T IMPORTANT TO GO IN TO THE SPACE IF YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND ALLA THE SMALLEST THINGS AROUND YOU. WE TALK ABOUT THE ESCAPE, ABOUT THE ITALIAN COLONIALISM, ABOUT THE BERLUSCONI’S 20 YEARS OF POWER IN ITALY AND WE TRY TO DESCRIBE HOW IT GET OUR LAND INTO RUINE, THEN WE TALK ABOUT THE ECONOMICS PROBLEM AND THE NEED TO GET AN ACTION AND TO GET AWAKE ALL OUR GENERATION BECAUSE IN THE FUTURE WE’LL CAN CHANGE ALL THIS ECONOMIC WAY OF LIFE, BUT WE MUST AWAKE OURSELF AND GET OUR EYES OPEN WIDE, ABOVE THE REALITY, NOT THE TELEFILMS THE TELEVISION, THE FUCKING REALITY.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
“LA COLPA” MEANS “THE BLAME” OR “THE FAULT” TO TAKE OUR FAULTS IS THE ONLY REVOLUTIONARY WAY THAT WE HAVE TO FREE OUR SOUL AND TO TRY TO RESTART OUR WAY OF LIFE.

5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
WE HAVE PLAYED ALREADY 26 SHOWS THROUG ITALY IN ALL THE MAIN CLUBS OF THE NORTH. OUR STAGE PERFORMANCE IS A VERY PHISICAL EXPERIENCE, WE ENDED THE LIVE COMPLETELY WET FROM THE SECOND SONG, SOMETIMES THE DRUM WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED, OUR SINGER WAS LOST IN THE CROWD AND THE STICK’S OF THE DRUMMER WERE FLYING THROUG ALL THE STAGE. IT’S A BATTLE EVERY NIGHT, WE THINK THAT YOU CAN BE CONVINCE YOUR CROWD ONLY IF YOU ARE REALLY GENUINE, SO WE TRY TO GIVE THE 100% IN EVERY CONCERT TO CREATE AN INCREDIBLE WAVE OF POWER TO SHARE WITH THE PEOPLE. New Keepers Of The Water Towers Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

We've been rehearsing the new material a lot, moulding it to a live setting. Next week we have the first date of many where we will preform the cosmic child in its entirety so were just about heading out of the two year process of creating this thing and are readying ourselves to ride this wave, in to the cosmos.
And yeah! We've got an old friend joining us on keyboards and that's pretty awesome

2.How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?

To me, it's less traditionall rock and metal, and more what made the older music stick out from the stoner metal scene.  We've tried to refine what makes us what we are as a band and we'll continue doing so is the plan. Having less musical influence from other people, diving deeper in to unknown sounds and new moods.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?

It's a reflection of the lives we, the writers, have lived so far. Like my young minds hybris and victors hate for monotonus work and needless process and conflict. Then we've put those experiences and insights through different theistic standpoints. I've ingenered it to progress as a path from ignorance to enlightenment. We strongly oppose religion and are firm believers in the mothods of science, reason and eternal death.

4.I know that the album title was inspired by Carl Sagan, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his theories

Well as far as I know, Sagan hasn't brought any substantial new theories to the table. What he did was to publish the cosmological theories of his time in an accessible and pretty awesome package, with a great original soundtrack. Our new album reflects a cosmic perspective of lifes begginings and ends. Carl, with a little help from our collective friend cannabis, have helped me and many others to gain the intrest and base knowledge to find out the relative truths in these subjects.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Oh that is a very tricky question to ask oneself! For me, a great show is where I can feel calm and be absorbed in to the music. Those are often the small dark venues with irattionally loud stage volumes. We've done loads of lovely shows but one in a semi-legal club, where I ended up working as stage manager for a year, stands out. 20 people in the audience and we were a little drunk, smoking on stage. I think our standards are higher now so I don't know if it'll ever be that much fun again.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?
A small bunch of festivals and a short European tour have been booked so far, but our booking and management deals are still fresh out of the oven so we'll get up to speed as time progresses.

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new album by fans of doom metal?
It has been overwhelming, I was almost prepared to have the album refused by the label since I didn't think this kind of music suited the typical metal head. But we've received great reviews all around so far and people seem to get what we are trying to accomplish. A big thanks to all the people who decide to head out of their comfort zone to give us a fighting chance is in order!

8.What is going on with the other musical projects these days?
We're jamming out with grass eating man regularly. Me and our stage keyboard player, Adam, formed the first incarnation of GEM more than 10 years ago and we are just now working on our first EP! It's a brutal doom band were I play the drums and everyone sings. And the material we have going on now is just bloody gruesome. I'm fucking exited about that.

9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We're working on new music right now, you can expect the same kind of bombastic dynamics and doomyness but were trying to scale down a bit on the grandiose and are stepping in to even more obscure harmonies. It's gonna be a blast ripping out some new stuff, we're actually playing a few new things live already.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Nothing fancy, 70s prog, some metals. I listen to a selective few bands in most genres. From yob through electric wizard to camel ,tame impala, eek a mouse and Gösta berlings saga. Depends on the set and setting! I've found a lot of inspiration for the cosmic child in the 70s wave of British prog, genesis, king crimson and all that.

11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Not much time left over between work, rehearsals and chillin with da herb I'm afraid. Some of us have been having some epic conquestadorial campaigns in heroes of might and magic VI lately haha.

12.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Thanks for not asking about our bands name. Cheers!

Demon Lung Interview

1.      Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?
Heading out on June 29th for a west coast tour with Wounded Giant on some dates and hooking up with Castle for a few toward the end of it.

2.      How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?
Since we recorded the EP ourselves last year, it doesn’t really have much production or layers.  We tried to keep it very simple.  With the new album, we went to Billy Anderson specifically because he is a master at stacking tons of dirty guitars and vocals without it taking over the mix.  There’s a LOT more going on sonically with “The Hundredth Name”.  And while we touched on some epic stuff with the EP, we certainly went full-out-epic on the new one.

3.      The song lyrics cover a lot of occult topics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in occultism?
The lyrics on this one are all based on the film “Warlock”.  We are all interested in the occult to a certain degree, but we do not believe in magic.

4.      What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
The easy answer is that it’s an Electric Wizard song.  Shanda and I used to have a roommate that had this terrible cough, we called it the Demon Cough.  Later it changed to the Demon Lung, and when it was time to name the band it just sorta stuck.

5.      What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
The Doom in June festival that we played a few weeks ago was a great show.  We usually have a shitload of fog, red lights, and a lot of gear on stage turned up very loud.

As a fan, getting to share the stage with Jucifer was a big highlight and great show.  Playing in front of their 15’ high stacks of cabinets was pretty surreal.

6.      Do you have any touring plans for the future?
See question 1.  After that we have a mini-tour in August with Wounded Giant and we’re playing the Southwest Terror Fest in Tucson in October.  We are currently trying to put something big together for December as well.

7.      On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of doom metal?
It’s been really great, much better than we anticipated.  Overall, we try to stay true to what we love about doom, but also try not to put limits on it.  There are some references to other little corners of metal throughout the record, as we are all individually have different heavy influences from black metal to power metal and everything in between.

8.      Are there any other musical projects going on these days?
Brent (our new second guitarist) and I have a weird Patton-esque band called The Fat Dukes of Fuck.  They put on a great show, and were my favorite band in Vegas before I joined a few years ago.

9.      What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We haven’t started writing for the next record yet since our new album has only been out for 3 weeks.  But if anything, we will be refining our sound and expanding on what we’ve done.  We hope to spend more time on the songs in the writing and recording phases next time.  We are currently discussing subjects for the next record, possibly an original story.

10.  What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Candlemass has always been our biggest influence.  Solitude Aeturnus, Maiden, Sabbath…..

Listening back to the record we can tell what we were listening to during certain parts.  Like the ending riff on the last song (Incantation), we were just saying that we must have been listening to a lot of Pallbearer during the writing of that one, and you can certainly tell.  That album dominated the rotation in 2012.  Doomshine is an amazing epic doom band from Germany that is also a favorite of ours.

11.  Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Horror films, definitely.  Between us we have literally thousands of DVDs and we are always digging into the past to find obscure stuff that we haven’t seen before.  We don’t really have time for much else: music and horror.

12.  Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
It should be an interesting year for us and we have a lot that we want to achieve, so stay tuned.
